Backstage at Lancaster's Christmas pantomime, Mother Goose, the Grand Theatre, Lancaster. Originating as far back as Roman times, Pantomimes have been central to British theatre. They became popular in their current form in the 19th Century under French influence. Victorian theatre companies made it part of Christmas celebrations and coined the name Pantomime.
