Lancaster Cathedral with the Moorlands residential district behind. A consortium of builders bought the Moorlands House estate to the east of the town centre in 1893. The streets that were developed on the land, through to the beginning of the 20th century, all have Scottish names. It seems that Mr Dowthwaite, one of the consortium of developers, had a passion for holidaying in Scotland. His interest has had a lasting effect on the Lancaster landscape. This terraced housing forms the majority of private residential property in the city.
