Skerton Bridge, Lancaster. Up until 1788 when Skerton bridge was built travellers used a four arched bridge near the beginning of the quay or via a ford further up the river. This bridge was built at a time when Lancaster was enjoying its greatest prosperity. Although there had been a bridge for centuries, during the second world war a separate military depot was set up in Skerton as they feared the bridges would be bombed.
